Cat people ask great questions. Here are the ones we hear most about cat flaps in Dubai homes, answered straight.
From the team at pet door specialists in Dubai: everything you wanted to know about cat flaps.

Microchip or manual flap?
Microchip flaps read your cat’s existing microchip and only unlock for your pets, which keeps strays and curious neighbours’ cats out. Manual flaps are simpler and let any cat-sized animal through. In Dubai, where street cats are everywhere, most owners choose microchip.
Will it keep stray cats out?
A microchip flap will, because it only opens for programmed chips. A manual flap will not. If uninvited visitors are your worry, the choice is easy.
Can you fit one in my sliding glass door?
Yes. We either replace the glass panel with one that has the flap opening, or fit a removable insert panel in the track. Renters usually prefer the insert.
How do I get my cat to use it?
Patience and treats. Prop the flap open at first so your cat gets used to the opening, then lower it gradually. Most cats figure it out within a few days. Timid cats may take a week or two.
Does the flap need batteries?
Microchip flaps run on standard batteries that last for months. A low-battery indicator gives you plenty of warning, and the flap fails safe so your cat is never locked out.
