Your dog nose-bumps the patio glass at 7am, whines at noon, and does the full-body press against the door every evening. If this sounds like your house in Arabian Ranches or JVC, you are probably thinking about a dog flap in the glass door.

Good news: it is a well-trodden job. A tempered glass panel can be replaced with a pre-cut panel that has a factory-cut hole for the flap. Here is how it works, what to check, and how to get it right the first time.

How a Dog Flap Goes Into a Glass Door

You cannot cut a hole in tempered glass after it is made. Any attempt will shatter it. So the standard method for dog flap in glass door installation in Dubai is panel replacement:

  1. We measure your existing panel. Exact height, width, and thickness, plus how the glass sits in the frame.
  2. A new tempered panel is cut with the flap hole. The hole is cut before the glass is tempered, so the edges stay strong and safe.
  3. The new panel goes in, and the flap is fitted and sealed. Brush and rubber seals keep out dust and draughts, and the flap position is checked against your dog’s height.

Getting the Size Right

The flap should clear your dog’s shoulders and back by a couple of centimetres. Too small and a nervous dog will refuse to use it. Too big and you lose more seal area than you need. When we visit, we check your dog against the flap sizes rather than guessing.

A Note on Double Glazing

If your door is double glazed, the same idea applies, but the flap fits into a sealed double-glazed unit built for the job. Our glass panel replacement guide walks through how that works.

Before You Book, Check These

  • Your tenancy agreement. Swapping a glass panel is reversible, since the original panel can be refitted at move-out. Most landlords accept this happily.
  • The frame condition. A door that drags or rattles should be sorted at the same time as the panel swap.
  • Which way the door opens. Hinged doors and sliding doors need different flap placements, and the flap should never clash with the handle.
