Your fly screen is torn, and now you are staring at it wondering: can you just replace the mesh, or does the whole screen need to go? It is a fair question, and the answer keeps you from ordering work you do not need, or patching something that will fail again in a month.
Here is the simple rule we use on every job, from apartments in JVC to villas in Damac Hills: if the frame is straight and the corners are solid, replace the mesh. If the frame is damaged, replace the screen.

Replace Just the Mesh When
- The frame is straight: Lay it flat. If all four sides sit level with no twist, the frame has life left in it.
- The corners are solid: Wiggle each corner. Firm joints mean the screen can be re-meshed and will hold tension properly.
- Only the mesh is damaged: Tears, brittleness, or sagging are mesh problems. Fresh mesh and new spline fix them completely.
Replace the Whole Screen When
- The frame is bent or kinked: A bent frame will never hold mesh evenly. It keeps pulling the mesh loose at the same spot.
- Corners are cracked: Broken corner joints let the frame rack out of square, and gaps open that bugs walk through.
- The size is wrong: Some older screens were cut slightly off and never sealed properly. A fresh screen made to the exact opening fits better.
