French doors are a feature, not just a doorway. Two glazed panels, slim frames, and a wide opening onto the terrace. The good news is that a cat flap fits into all of that without spoiling the look, because it goes into just one panel of one door.

From the terrace, you barely notice it. From the living room, your cat has its own entrance. Here is how it works with cat flap installation for hinged patio doors on French-style doors.

Which panel gets the flap

The flap goes into the lower glazed panel of the door you open least, usually the secondary door. This keeps your main traffic door completely untouched and puts the flap out of the way of daily coming and going.

How the doors keep working

  • Both doors still open fully. The flap sits within the panel and adds no bulk to the frame.
  • Locks and bolts unaffected. The flap is far below the locking points on both doors.
  • The look stays clean. A neat frame in white, black, or brown blends with most door finishes.

Glass handling

As with all toughened glass, the panel is replaced rather than cut. A new panel is made with the flap opening formed in the workshop, then swapped for the existing one. Your original panel is kept intact.

One thing to check first

Confirm which of your two doors is the “active” one you open daily. The flap goes in the passive door so it never interferes with the handle, the lock, or the way you use the doors.
