Labradors, huskies, and golden retrievers are all over Dubai’s villa communities, from Arabian Ranches to Damac Hills. A flap sized for a beagle will not do them. Large breeds need an XL flap, and an XL flap needs the right glass and frame to hold it.

A large dog door in glass installed properly in Dubai starts with sizing the flap to the dog, then making sure the panel and frame can take the larger opening without flexing.

Sizing the Flap for a Big Dog

  1. Measure the shoulder height. The flap top should sit a little above your dog’s back when standing normally.
  2. Measure the chest width. Add a few centimetres either side so a broad-chested dog does not squeeze through.
  3. Watch how your dog moves. Nervous or older dogs prefer a taller, roomier flap they do not have to duck for. A confident young lab will push through almost anything.

What the Glass and Frame Must Handle

A bigger flap means a bigger cut-out, which means less glass around the opening. We use tempered glass at the right thickness so the panel stays rigid, and we check the frame beads and gaskets hold the panel firmly all round. If your door already rattles in its frame, that gets sorted during the same visit.

Security With a Larger Opening

An XL flap is a bigger hole in your door, so the flap you choose matters. Go for a rigid flap with a solid locking panel you can slide in at night. That way the dog has daytime freedom and you have a fully closed door after dark.

Training a Big Dog to Use It

  • Prop the flap open at first. Let your dog walk through the open hole for treats before the flap is even fitted.
  • Lower it gradually. Once the flap is in, hold it half open, then let it rest on their back as they pass.
  • Keep sessions short. Five minutes of happy practice beats half an hour of frustration for both of you.
