A slamming door is the building equivalent of a dripping tap. It annoys everyone, it wears out the door, and it is almost always fixable with an adjustment.

We adjust door closers in Dubai in offices, shops and homes. Most slamming doors need ten minutes and a screwdriver, not a new closer.

Door closer adjustment in Dubai, hand setting speed valve to stop slamming

Adjustments that stop the slam

  1. Slow the closing speed. Find the closing-speed valve on the closer body, usually marked, and turn it a quarter-turn at a time until the door glides shut. Small turns make a big difference.
  2. Set the latching speed. The last few degrees need their own setting. Slow enough to be quiet, firm enough to click the latch home.
  3. Check the backcheck. If the door is being thrown open by wind or heavy hands, backcheck cushions the opening swing and protects the wall and the closer.
  4. Tighten everything. Loose arm fixings and wobbling closer bodies change the geometry. Snug them up before you touch the valves.
  5. Look for oil. If fluid is leaking from the closer body, no adjustment will hold. The unit needs resealing or replacing.

When adjustment is not enough

  • Wrong size closer. If the closer was undersized for the door, it will always struggle. Replacement with the right size is the real fix.
  • Worn hinges. A closer cannot close a door that is dragging on failing hinges. Fix the hinges first.
  • Warped door or frame. Heat and building movement shift frames. Sometimes the closer is innocent and the alignment is guilty.
