Dog flaps come in sizes with friendly names and unhelpful definitions. What one brand calls medium, another calls large. The label on the box matters less than your dog’s actual measurements, so let us sort that out first.

Choosing a doggy door for your sliding door in Dubai starts with the dog, not the catalogue. Here is how the sizes break down and how to measure at home with a tape.

The Sizes, in Plain Terms

  1. Small flaps. For toy breeds and small terriers. The opening is roughly the size of a dinner plate. Fine for a chihuahua, useless for a beagle.
  2. Medium flaps. The most common choice. Suits beagles, French bulldogs, and similar stocky mid-size dogs.
  3. Large flaps. For labs, huskies, and golden retrievers. The opening clears a broad chest without squeezing.
  4. Extra-large flaps. For the big ones: German shepherds, great Danes, and anything that makes visitors step back. Needs a wider insert panel and a sturdy frame.

How to Measure Your Dog

  • Shoulder height. Measure from the floor to the top of the shoulders while your dog stands. The flap top should sit a little above this.
  • Chest width. Measure the widest point of the chest. Add a few centimetres each side for comfortable clearance.
  • Watch them duck. Older dogs and nervous dogs prefer a taller opening they can walk through without crouching.

When in Doubt, Go One Size Up

A flap that is slightly generous gets used from day one. A flap that is slightly tight gets ignored, and then you have a dog door nobody uses. The only trade-off with going bigger is a wider insert panel, which we build to match anyway.
